I've recently dived into the subgenre of 'friendslop' games for game nights within my personal Discord of friends, and we've all been having a blast together during regularly held game nights. Lots of folks look at these multiplayer games and look down on them as a subgenre of co-op gaming for their unserious nature, hence the name 'friendslop,' but I'm finding some of the best gems in gaming through playing them.

While these games require having a group of people to play with, and they're best played with a group of people you know, there are plenty of Discords and other forums dedicated to offering community gaming for those who don't have friends they can just tag and see if they're down to play. Before we get into a list of games you may want to check out for your next online game night, I'm going to answer the question: What is friendslop?

'Friendslop' games are cooperative video games that focus on social interaction. These games have a low barrier of entry, usually being great for all sorts of gaming rigs, and are usually pretty easy to learn. The main focus, being on social interaction, allows for plenty of opportunity for hilarious moments when played together with the right group of people. These are great games to play with people who live in different area codes, who may not be much of a gamer, as they can just focus on the basics and having fun together.

It's much like playing games such as Cards Against Humanity while hanging out with friends. Easy to learn and focused on just having a good time. Now that I've played a good chunk of these kinds of games, I wanted to share a list of titles worth playing at your next online game night.

PEAK

Let's start with my favorite of this list: PEAK. I actually ended up having a bit of an obsession with this game for several months, playing as often as I could with a group of friends while going through a difficult time mentally.

In PEAK, players have to navigate through 5 levels, reaching their respective peaks to move on to the next level. The joy of playing PEAK is not so much in reaching the final ending peak and leaving the island your character is stranded on, but in the journey to get there. Players must survive an assortment of obstacles to reach the end. From hunger to poison, burns, tornadoes, the freezing cold, scorpions, giant beetles, winds that push you off of heights, and so much more, everything is against you and your group in this game. All the while, everyone is doing their best to help each other survive, or in some cases, being a total hindrance, leading to some hilariously unforgettable moments.

What's great about PEAK is that it's also a game that can be played alone for those who want to challenge themselves and see how fast they can get through the game. At one point, I made it my goal to find the Golden Bingbong and throw him in the Kiln alone! Just to test my gumption. I made it eventually, and it was one of the most satisfying game runs of my life.

Cheese Rolling

This is probably one of the more ridiculous of the games on this list that I'm putting out there, but sometimes you just want to play a stupid game that's so ridiculously awful it's good. Especially when you play with a bunch of determined friends who want a little competition in their multiplayer games. It doesn't take much to get the gist of Cheese Rolling: roll down the hill and catch the cheese! The only thing is, you've got to battle against some ridiculous physics to be the first to reach the cheese wheel.

Better yet, the game has a setting where players can be the cheese, adding a bit more difficulty as players who win the round take the wheel, so to speak, and can gain points by keeping themselves out of reach of the other players. Even better? The game is free with some purchasable items for customizing your in-game cheese chaser.

Burglin' Gnomes

You might have seen this game on TikTok. It's been going viral for the absolutely ridiculous hijinks players can get into. Grab a couple of friends and set out to burgle homes, taking anything and everything your little gnome hands can handle. But be careful! The occupant of your targeted home may not be so happy about the theft.

What's great about Burglin' Gnomes is the chaos that can happen during a robbery. From accidentally shooting another player to losing limbs, cat attacks, and getting tossed out or flushed by the home's occupant, the possibilities are endless. It's a great time when played with folks who are okay with failing objectives, just as long as everyone is having fun.

Frog Sqwad

The Frog Sqwad demo is still a bit rough around the edges, but the gameplay shows real promise. Work with friends to feed a giant frog king by going out and gathering all the food you can get into your boat and bringing back his demanded amount. Fail to meet thresholds 3 times and you and your crew die. The fun of this game is not so much in succeeding but in going out and using your frog tongue to swipe food, avoid obstacles and help your fellow frog out. I highly recommend filling up with food and letting your friends cling onto you and bouncing around just for the hell of it.

Super Battle Golf

Super Battle Golf is less slop and more of a polished up online PvP but it's one I've been enjoying with friends because sometimes you want to have a little low stakes and easy to learn competition with friends. Super battle golf is a hilarious time filled with shooting your friends and running them over with golf karts while attempting to get your golf ball in the whole before everyone else.

Make rivals of your buddies and have a blast. If you can somehow manage a hole in one, your friends will absolutely hate you for it and spend the rest of the games targeting you. Have fun!
