On December 7th, 1941 Japanese planes attacked the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. More than 2,300 Americans were killed. The U.S.S. Arizona was completely destroyed and the U.S.S. Oklahoma capsized. On Aug. 23, 1994, Congress designated Dec. 7 as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.
Since 1987 the Marine Corps League Detachment 340 of Huntington has commemorated this day. This year, current and former members of the armed forces gathered at Harris Riverfront Park in Huntington. There was an Honor Guard, firing squad, and the playing of Taps. There is one surviving member from the attack who still lives in the area, but was unable to attend because of health issues.
Our local Stack was proud to have been invited to participate in this solemn event. They created a beautiful wreath, (shown below) handmade with red and white carnations that was placed into the Ohio River. The ceremony is a memorial to the fallen.
