The VAWLA Veteran Peer Community Center (Peer Center) is a program meant to combat isolation for Veterans living on or near WLA Campus by providing a safe and welcoming space for Veterans to socially gather, recreate, and engage amongst peers without clinical presence. The Peer Center is equipped with a full kitchen, a dayroom/activity area with a big screen TV and retro gaming equipment, a library of board games and books, a tech-room, and a classroom space for education and training purposes. The Peer Center is staffed by certified peers that engage with Veterans to create relationships and enable warm linkages to existing services in the community and healthcare center. The current utilization of the Peer Center is roughly 20 Veterans per day. With over 1000 Veterans residing in permanent, transitional, and clinical programs at WLA on any given night, there is opportunity to increase engagement drastically. At this time, in collaboration with a Veteran Council, the Peer Center steering committee is looking to increase programming at the center in order to bolster daily/weekly activities for Veteran members.

Well if there's one activity we think will boost Veterans, it's gaming. Now one of the great things about our headquarters being located in Los Angeles is that we can hand deliver local Supply Crates. Which is just what we did.

Our Executive Director, Stephen Machuga and Programs Director Brian Snyder made the trip out to the West LA VA Peer Center and delivered not just one, but three consoles: A brand new PlayStation 5, a couple of Xbox Ones, and a chunk of games. They also brought along some accessories and tabletop games so the Veterans can enjoy a full range of gaming!
