The Stacks - Initializing 2025

Writer: Stack UpStack Up

With 2025 underway, we wanted to make sure we get more word out there about one of Stack Up's most underappreciated pillar programs: The Stacks. The Stacks are Stack Up's in-person volunteer pods, located in locations across the U.S. and in some places around the world. Volunteers with the Stacks work together to host game nights, volunteer locally, represent Stack Up at local events, and more. Our Stacks program has been growing, with more active Stacks hosting consistent events for local area Veterans, Active Duty Military and supportive civilians.

For the January and February period, Holloman Air Force Base, Boston, and the Indianapolis Stacks all held some local game nights and did some planning for the year.

Holloman Air Force Base | January 8, 2025

Tonight was our first weekly board game night of the new year! The Holloman Community Activity Center continues to be a great support of the group, and we do our best to support them. We actually receive special treatment from the downstairs restaurant, Piccola Cucina, as they will deliver our food upstairs to us instead of making us wait. Amy gets great tips from us for stuff like this. This week, we had myself, Blake, Latoya, Diane, Rose Trevor, Carlos, and the rest of the usual gang. However, this week we were joined by Chris, our friend from Friday Night Karaoke at the same location.

The Holloman Community Activity Center has been the best possible location for our Stack. We are constantly finding new players for the group, including a visit from a few local Magic: The Gathering players tonight! Because this was our first game night of the new year, everyone got to show off their new games, such as Vaalbara and the Tea Dragon Society’s Autumn Harvest expansion! Trevor brought his new copy of Azul, and when Amy was bringing up our orders, she might have tried to eat one of decorative tiles!

Yet again, another successful game night for the Holloman Stack. While Chris isn’t much of a gamer, he was still interested in our events and mission. He’s new to the base, having only been here 9 months so far, and is exited to join us for future gaming events! Every Stack has to meet their people where they are, and hold the events they want to see, and Holloman has found a ton of success with board games. We wouldn’t have found our success here if our members weren’t vocal about what they want to see, making suggestions, and bringing their own great games. The community buy-in is really what makes these events so amazing.

Indianapolis | January 20, 2025

This month the Indianapolis Stack held a stack lead meeting where we planned for the first half of 2025 and discussed the opportunities available to us. This was held at Doug's (ninjapilot) house in Indianapolis. This was attended by stack lead Daniel (eversoar) and alt-stack lead DJ (d4rthdelirium) and alt-stack lead Doug (ninjapilot). This was the first of quarterly or bi-annual leadership meetings.
We chose this Stack event so we could better server the community and provide longer lead times for events. One of the things we identified last year was that we were operating on a month-to-month schedule where we never really focused on a repeatable time/location or provided more than 2 weeks notice about upcoming events. We decided that we wanted to try and fix this leading into 2025. We did have to reschedule this event from earlier in the month due to extreme snow conditions that made travel nearly impossible or very risky.
The event was successful in that we have tentative schedule for February - August 2025 events. These include local gaming conferences, game days, and general events that the local veteran and veteran supporters may find interesting. We looked hard at what events were happening in the area, what our calendars looked like from an availability standpoint, and who we knew at each of the event spaces. I truly believe 2025 is going to be a great year for the Indianapolis Stack, and StackUp as a whole. We truly want to grow participation and recognition to the StackUp mission. This planning event was our first step towards those goals. We will be meeting again probably in June to do this again and plan September-December.

Boston | January 28, 2025

The Boston Stack gathered for another unforgettable game night, blending camaraderie, laughter, and competition. Among the attendees were 7 veterans, 4 firefighters, and 1 police officer, along with friends and supporters, all coming together to share in the excitement.
The night featured games like Black Ops 2 Zombies on PS3, alongside Mario Strikers and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Nintendo Switch. To complement the gaming vibe, volunteers and members enjoyed an array of video game-themed drinks and snacks.

To cap off the evening, a heartfelt moment of recognition took place as a Certificate of Appreciation was awarded to Peter Lind, owner of Balance Patch. His generous support in offering his gaming café space free of charge for the past two years has been instrumental in fostering this community.

We'll be posting periodically to update everyone on what's been going on with our Stacks Program in the hopes of perhaps luring some new volunteers in who might be interested in starting a Stack in their local area, or joining one. If you are interested in joining or starting a Stack, hit the button below to learn more and see if a Stack exists near you. Join our Discord to keep up with Stacks events.
