Have you ever wanted to play a burger flipper in space? Well, now you can in Galaxy Burger. Take on the task of serving the best burgers in the galaxy. Your customers? A mix of earthling, aliens, and mecha-kitties? Okay, the mecha-kitties are kind of cute though.
Wake Up and Smell the Burgers
Okay, I have to admit it: The first couple of levels are incredibly boring. They serve the purpose of getting you prepared for what the rest of the game is: clicking around the screen, taking orders from customers, picking up burger ingredients, cooking them, and putting them all together on a bun. It's very point-and-click so not too much to it. You get the gist of what the overall gameplay is very quickly on the first planet (Mercury) and you only have a couple of very basic recipes to work with. So it gets very repetitive very fast. I recommend jumping to the next planet as quickly as possible.
The game has 3 gameplay types: Regular Shift, Endless Shift, and Time Challenge. For every planet (There are 23 total.) you start with access to only the Regular Shift. It wouldn't be too bad if getting past the 2-star level and on to 3 stars so that you can access to the other gameplay types didn't require doing regular shifts over and over and over again. Once you're beyond the 3rd star for each planet, Galaxy Burger gets a lot more interesting and challenging. Endless Shift is great for building up reputation points and money to use for unlocking other planets. Time Challenge is perfect for those who want to feel a bit more harried while serving their customers.
There's also a multiplayer mode for those who are looking for some silly co-op gameplay, but I didn't get a chance to check that out as my friends were too busy with other games.
Get to Flippin'
While each planet offers more options to customers, that also means handling more of a variety of orders. You also get new burger recipes with each planet you unlock, which can be a challenge to keep memorized. If you can memorize those recipes, though, the game will be all the easier for you, and you won't have to keep referencing the recipe book every time you get an order.
While the game starts off pretty slow and could use better balancing when it comes to unlocking the next star level, at least up until the 3rd star is reached, the repetition is very soothing. Galaxy Burger is a great game for turning off your brain after a long, tough week and just serving the galaxy to your heart's content. Endless Shift is especially great for just seeing how far you can take your service while tuning out the world while you play.
What about those Mecha-Kitties?
Don't worry, we'll talk more about the aesthetics of this game. The pixelated art is pretty decent and pleasing. The assortment of customers ranges from the silly to the strange. I'm particularly fond of the cats that show up surrounded by their mecha armor. They have a range of expressions from the sad to the sassy and they seem to be showing up after a long day of work. Galaxy Burger has a pretty unobtrusive soundtrack that's great for spacing out. Yes, I did mean that pun.
Verdict
If you can get past the first couple of stages and Regular Shifts, Galaxy Burger is a great game for shutting off your mind. The gameplay isn't anything special or new, but it's relaxing. If you're not down for a game that's point-and-click repetition, you won't enjoy this game. While $20 USD on Steam is pretty average for a game of this type, I think most would probably feel this game is best as a sale purchase when they're looking for an inexpensive new game to try out. Regardless:
