Redshirt Roundtable: April 2023

For our Redshirt Roundtable question for April, we decided to ask the community about places they've traveled and places they want to travel:

  • If you feel comfortable sharing, where do you live? (You can just share state or country if you would rather not share your city.)

  • Where have you traveled? (Feel free to list more than one place.)

  • Tell us about one of the places you've been to and why? (Were you in the Military? Was it for work? Vacation?)

  • Would you like to revisit any of the places you've ever been?

  • What is a city/state/country you've always wanted to visit? Why?

*Note: I messed up while putting together this month's Redshirt Roundtable questionnaire and forgot to include a question asking for the Username of the person filling out the form. Nameless answers have 'Redshirt 1,' 'Redshirt 2,' etc., in place of Usernames. - Sahara

I went to Japan to visit a friend from my time in the Navy. It was pretty awesome. I had a great time and got to see all kinds of cool places. The food was amazing.

Would you like to revisit any of the places you've ever been?

Japan for sure, I definitely gotta go back for more food. I also wouldn't mind going back to Boston or New York. They have pretty great food places.

What is a city/state/country you've always wanted to visit? Why?

Bolivia. I've always wanted to see the skateboarding and wrestling Cholitas. Plus food. Anytime I travel anywhere, I want to try local foods. If I could travel the world trying different food, I would be beyond happy.

Florida

Where have you traveled? (Feel free to list more than one place.)

South Korea (twice), Okinawa, Mainland Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Hawai'i.

Tell us about one of the places you've been to and why? (Were you in the Military? Was it for work? Vacation?)

All 5 of these locations were a mix of temporary duty & being stationed there. South Korea was where I have been stationed twice. While there I was able to experience Singapore & Thailand as extra temporary duty trips. South Korea has one hell of an autonomous societal vibe but if you try to learn their language & culture, they are some of the most welcoming folks out there in the world.

Would you like to revisit any of the places you've ever been?

Honestly, yes. I would love to revisit all the places I have been There is something about being an outsider trying to immerse yourself into another culture is what I love. Plus I overall just feel more alive being somewhere else. Even a place like Hawai'i. It may be part of the USA but it feels like it's own little country out there. After that trip to Hawai'i I realized travelling is in my blood, always has been. I just never fully tapped into it until now.

What is a city/state/country you've always wanted to visit? Why?

I have not been to Europe yet. I would love to go just for the experience. It would be somewhere new and I can add it to my list of places I have been. I have many friends out there who love living out there. To narrow it down though, It would have to be Italy, Spain, & Portugal. That is where my ancestry is from.

Most definetly! Canada, Malta and Greece for sure!

What is a city/state/country you've always wanted to visit? Why?

Los Angelos and New Orleans. Mainly because I've played a lot of game that took place in those cities. And New Orleans sounds awesome as well nightlife wise.

Dayton, OH

Where have you traveled? (Feel free to list more than one place.)

Afghanistan, Iraq, Dominican Republic, and Korea are the major trips

Tell us about one of the places you've been to and why? (Were you in the Military? Was it for work? Vacation?)

I went to South Korea with my sister when I was 15 for a mission trip for "English camp," where we helped teach the English language to students for a few weeks. That was my first time out of the country, and it was incredible. It was truly a different world to me - the culture, the food, the food markets - and the people we worked with were truly amazing human beings, both the Americans and Koreans we worked with.

Would you like to revisit any of the places you've ever been?

I would revisit them all, even the deployments.

What is a city/state/country you've always wanted to visit? Why?

Scotland, hands down. The landscape, for one, would be incredible to see. The people, the history, and of course the scotch are also key factors there. And I want to play D&D in a castle lol

Midwest USA

Where have you traveled? (Feel free to list more than one place.)

Germany, Spain, Italy, Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel, Djibouti, Somalia, one of the stans that starts with a K but I always get it confused with the other one, Turkey, Antarctica, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE, Kuwait, Japan, Haiti, probably a ton of other places that I forgot because the list is long.

Tell us about one of the places you've been to and why? (Were you in the Military? Was it for work? Vacation?)

I did a lot of travel in the military and I still travel a bit for work occasionally. One of the most interesting places I've been to would probably be Turkey. I've been through visiting the air bases as an enroute stationed there for a short tour and I've been through as aircrew. I've also been through the civilian side of aviation several times while on active military, thanks weird deployment office for that one, and the country was always quite the experience. It's really pretty most of the year and there is a lot of fascinating culture. The people were always quite nice. It's also a hilarious mess dealing with their government on paperwork. I've got stories for days on that front.

Would you like to revisit any of the places you've ever been?

I've always contended that if they wouldn't shoot at me Iraq would make a heck of a tourist country. The architecture and history is fascinating. The downside is the mortars and the pot shots when you're walking down the street. There are so many impressive buildings and lots of ancient history to explore and it's really pretty. I'd also be down to visit Antarctica again. It's really pretty and you can see ALL the stars at night, but it's also not exactly known for being tourist friendly so unless you have an excuse to be down there you're not going. I've never been overnight more than one or two days during a resupply mission at McMurdo so I think it'd be cool to get to do a full summer down there. Would be great for studying stars, which is probably why there are so many astronomers down there among all the other scientists.

What is a city/state/country you've always wanted to visit? Why?

Iceland. I just think it'd be neat. If the north pole counts, that. Mostly because it'd be cool to sit up there for a while and watch the sun spin around you. Plus you could technically circumnavigate the planet from up there by just running in a circle for a little bit going through all the time zones.
