Redshirt Roundtable: April

Thank you to everyone who has been participating in our monthly Redshirt Roundtables. You have all been fun to learn about, and seeing our community come together in these posts talking about games they love is worth the reading.

If you are new here, a Redshirt Roundtable is a community blog post where we ask the community a few questions about video games, Stack Up, or anything else we want to talk about. This gives our community members a chance to get to know each other better and get themselves featured on our blog.

April's theme for the Redshirt Roundtable was "Favorite Franchises." We asked our community the following questions:

  • What is your favorite video game franchise/series? What makes it so awesome?

  • Which game is the best out of your favorite franchise/series? Why is it the best?

  • What is the best movie franchise/series? Name your favorite character from it.

What is your favorite video game franchise/series? What makes it so awesome?

The Titanfall games. I'm a huge sci-fi fan and grew up on Halo, and this is basically Spartans who can parkour and giant mech robots. Basically, everything I'd want in a science fiction universe rolled into one game franchise.

Which game is the best out of your favorite franchise/series? Why is it the best?

Titanfall 2. The campaign is amazing and tells a great story. The multiplayer is smooth and fun. Really fast-paced.

What is the best movie franchise/series? Name your favorite character from it.

Best movie franchise would have to be the Pirates of the Caribbean movies with Jack Sparrow as my favorite character.

What is your favorite video game franchise/series? What makes it so awesome?

Borderlands, hands down, just the humor, gunplay, and endless variabilities of guns.

Which game is the best out of your favorite franchise/series? Why is it the best?

Borderlands 2, best humor, best story.

What is the best movie franchise/series? Name your favorite character from it.

Harry Potter or James Bond, Goldfinger, Ginny Weasley, and Dumbledore.

What is your favorite video game franchise/series? What makes it so awesome?

I'm going to have to go with Call of Duty. I've played it since I probably 12. (Yes, very incriminating.) It's been the cream of the crop for single-player and multiplayer shooting games year after year.

Which game is the best out of your favorite franchise/series? Why is it the best?

My favorite is probably Modern Warfare 2. The campaign was insane, and it was the first online game I ever grinded on. I still remember some of my class setups from back then.

What is the best movie franchise/series? Name your favorite character from it.

The Dark Knight trilogy. Batman is my favorite character *of course*. I think Heath Ledger's Joker beats Bane (Tom Hardy), but they both played excellent villains.

What is your favorite video game franchise/series? What makes it so awesome?

I absolutely loved the Bioshock games. I was late to the table for the original Bioshock but decided to jump in one day to see what all the hype was about, and then I was hooked. I loved the gameplay, the concepts, and the incredibly atmospheric environments. The games keep you on your toes with a bunch of action and a touch of horror. The thing that makes these games so awesome is how I can just lose myself in the world of the games and enjoy the endorphin rush. I also love the customization aspect and how you can tailor the playstyle a little bit to your own taste.

Which game is the best out of your favorite franchise/series? Why is it the best?

All three Bioshock games were amazing, so this is a close one for me. While I loved the change in environment for Bioshock: Infinite, the first Bioshock game just had something magical going on. It was my first foray into Rapture, and it had me awestruck throughout the entire game. I loved collecting bits of the plot and as I played, and once again, that creepy atmospheric environment just drew me in. This game definitely sold me on the series, and I'll always have nostalgia for it.

I'm going to have to go with Star Trek for this one. As a Navy veteran and a science fiction fanatic, the whole concept of taking a system akin to our own military into space for exploration simply blows my mind. With the hugely varied cast over the years, it's hard to pick a favorite, but I'll come back to Jean Luc Picard every time. Other favorites are Spock and Bones and that love/hate chemistry their friendship maintains.

What is your favorite video game franchise/series? What makes it so awesome?

If I had to pick an overall series from all my time gaming that would be my favorite, it would always come back to The Legend of Zelda. I like other games like Skyrim and Fallout and Elite Dangerous, but when a new Zelda game comes out, it can single-handedly make me buy a new console just to play it. The latest iteration, Breath of the Wild, may well be the first one to topple my thoughts that Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask are the best Zelda games of all time. What other game series can you think of where the best game in the series gets replaced by the most recent game in the series and has been running as long as this one has?

Which game is the best out of your favorite franchise/series? Why is it the best?

First, Ocarina of Time because it was the first to really be "Open World," and you could play it out of order which was rare for games of the N64/PS1 era. Breath of the Wild is great too. I’ve seen folks complain about it, but they are reaching because the game is so good they’re just trying to find problems. The new mechanics took me a while to get into with the whole "your weapons aren't permanent" thing, but I think that the way they shook up the Zelda formula was good for the series. It would really depend on your age which game you think is best, though. I would put a tie for OoT and Majora's Mask and BotW for best Zelda games in the series.

What is the best movie franchise/series? Name your favorite character from it.

I do not really have a "favorite" movie series, but if I had to pick, I'd go with the Harry Potter series. Mostly because I like the story, and the films are a great way to get in on that action without having to read the whole book again. I also like the Fantastic Beast films that are being added to the series. I think the film series is great. It tells a compelling story, even if it is filled with plot holes, and it is just good fun to watch. Plus, there are now 10 films in the overall series, so it's great for a binge-watch.

What is your favorite video game franchise/series? What makes it so awesome?

I absolutely loved Battlefield for a long time, and then they went away from modern warfare. But for now, I play OverWatch and Smite until BF6 comes out. I love these games because they are competitive, and I usually just get lost in them.

Which game is the best out of your favorite franchise/series? Why is it the best?

I would say the best game of the Battlefield series was Bad Company. I love the whole Idea of artillery and constant chaos. It's an ADHD playground.

What is the best movie franchise/series? Name your favorite character from it.

Best movie of all time is V for vendetta. I love the message it sent and the character's motive.

What is your favorite video game franchise/series? What makes it so awesome?

God of War. The best story of revenge and set in one of my favorite universes.

Which game is the best out of your favorite franchise/series? Why is it the best?

Probably God of War 3 or the newest God of War. God of War 3 was the ultimate example of what the studio could do on last-gen platforms, and the new God of War has a different combat experience, which is fantastic, as well as a beautiful story.

What is the best movie franchise/series? Name your favorite character from it.

Alien, because it was my first introduction to "adult" sci-f when I was a kid, and it has one of the greatest designed creatures ever to grace the big screen. Favorite Character: The Alien (Xenomorph)

What is your favorite video game franchise/series? What makes it so awesome?

Final Fantasy... it's always so story-rich and graphically gorgeous!

Which game is the best out of your favorite franchise/series? Why is it the best?

It's a toss-up between FFVII (original), FFVII (remake), or FFXIV... all for different reasons. FFVII (OG) because it was the first Final Fantasy I ever played; FFVII (R) because it was an excellent blend of new tech and story while still maintaining the original nostalgia; and FFXIV for its flexibility and multiplayer fun!

What is the best movie franchise/series? Name your favorite character from it.

That's tough! I'd have to go with the entire MCU, honestly... lol... I could watch Avengers movies until time ends, and I'd be a happy person!
