Weapons is already one of the best movies of the year. Zach Cregger’s follow-up to the successful and disturbing Barbarian is a must-see. The film is now in its third week of release and has continued to dominate the box office. If you have a chance to see anything in theaters before the end of the summer, Weapons is the one to watch.

The story follows a handful of people in a town traumatized by a mysterious event. When the students of a grade school class disappear overnight, an evil plot begins to be unveiled that involves sacrifice and the pursuit of eternal life. It’s up to a teacher, a dad, a cop, and the only kid in the class of missing children who didn’t vanish to set things right and restore peace to the town.

Weapons is a blast. Some of the best parts of the film really focus on our main cast of characters including Julia Garner as the schoolteacher whose class goes missing, Josh Brolin as a dad who wants to know what happened to his son, Benedict Wong as the principal who just wants this all to blow over, and Amy Madigan who plays the strange outsider character Aunt Gladys in a way that makes her dominate every scene.

Zach Creggor is now showing that he is a director worth paying serious attention to. With this being such a strong and raucous sophomore effort from the filmmaker, we can only wait eagerly for what he has in store for us next. Weapons has to be seen in the theater on the big screen. If you haven’t gone yet, go before it’s too late.
