Review: Turbo Golf Racing

Developer: Hugecalf Studios Limited

Publisher: Secret Mode, Hugecalf Studios Limited

Available on: PlayStation 5, Xbox One, PC, Xbox Series X|S

For all my Rocket League fans, you might want to stick around for this one. From Hugecalf Studios, Turbo Golf Racing is a new multiplayer game that mixes (you guessed it) golf and racing! Think PGA Tour meets Nascar, sprinkle in a few different game modes and vehicle customization, and boom, you're playing Turbo Golf Racing.

Although the game was released early back in August of 2022, it's now time for the game's full release as of April 4th, 2024. The game looks very polished and instantly catches your eye. You'll get three different presets available to use and customize to your liking. Everything from the body of the car to the spoiler and everything in between can be modified to have you rolling through the course in style. Not only did the devs give you options for your vehicle but you also get multiple options for how you'd like to play! Turbo Golf Racing offers a racing-only mode, 8-player golfing mode, trials, 1v1 golf battle, custom games, and for those competitors, there's even a RANKED mode!

I only had the pleasure of using my mouse and keyboard, but that didn't stop me from sinking a couple of birdies. I will say that plugging in a controller might be an even better way to go for this game, so if you have one lying around, this is a perfect time to blow the dust off of it. But for us, on the mouse and keys, you'll be using the standard WASD, space bar, and left click mostly. The game feels smooth, and the physics are on point. The game offers a chance to spectate other players once you've finished, similar to how fall guys allow you.

If you haven’t noticed by now, most games are leaning toward microtransactions. Turbo Golf Racing is part of the “in crowd” when it comes to their in-game shop. One big key difference is that this in-game shop works off in-game currency and trophies you get from wins (no breaking the bank here). The shop offers avatars, decorated balls, and even loot chests, so be sure to save those points!

It’s easy to get distracted by all the bells and whistles of a game that sometimes the mechanics get lost, but not here. I'm sure some of you are thinking, “golfing with cars? Snoozefest.”. Rest assured, this is not the average racing golf game; you're in full control over a powerful boost that helps propel the ball long distances. To make your chances of getting a birdie even higher, there are speed pads along the course that, once activated by your ball, give an extra speed boost, providing more distance. If that doesn’t pique your interest, there are bounce pads located within the course as well. If you can manage to get your ball in one of these bad boys, it will send your ball flying towards the hole putting you in a much better position to sink the putt with as little strokes as possible.

Turbo Golf Racing, in my opinion, is well put together, tons of fun, and something you can do solo or with your friends and still have a blast. I'm excited to explore more, especially unlocking the ranked gameplay to climb the leaderboards. Playability for multiple age groups is one of the best parts of the game. So, if you're tired of hitting a soccer ball with a car, maybe change the pace and give Turbo Golf Racing a try!
